THE SECRETARY OF THE NAVY
WASHINGTON

The President of the United States takes pleasure in commending the

UNITED STATES SHIP HOPKINS

for service as follows:

“For outstanding heroism as a ship in action against the enemy when, on January 6–7, 1945, she was the first ship of the attack force to enter LINGAYEN GULF, LUZON, Philippine Islands. As squadron flagship, while being harassed by strafing, bombing, torpedo and suicide plane attacks, she courageously led the high speed minesweepers through the sweeping of the gulf. By her unswerving performance of duty, the sweeping was completed ahead of scheduled ensuring safe entry for the ships of the fire support and transport groups. During the period, she destroyed one Japanese aircraft and assisted in the destruction of two others. On seeing the PALMER bombed and sinking, HOPKINS immediately jettisoned her minesweeping gear and, heroically, went to the assistance of PALMER, rescuing ninety-three survivors. The gallantry and determination in action of this vessel in overcoming these hazardous conditions were outstending and merit the highest praise.”
