Comdr. Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright was born at New York 27 July 1821, and served with distinction in the Civil War, commanding
Harriet Lane in actions against Forts Jackson and St. Philip. He was killed in an attack on Galveston Harbor New Years Day 1863.

Master Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright, Jr. son of Comdr. Wainwright, was born at New York 29 January 1849. Promoted master on 21 March 1870, he died as a result of a boat explosion in
Mohican, 19 June of that year.

Comdr. Richard Wainwright, cousin of Comdr. Jonathan Wainwight, was born at Charlestown, Massachusetts, in 1817 and commanded
Hartford during the Civil War. He died 10 August 1862.

Rear Admiral Richard Wainwright, son of Comdr. Richard Wainwright, was executive officer of battleship
Maine when she was lost at Havana. He later was commended for valor commanding
Goucester at the Battle of Santiago. He retired 7 December 1911 and died at Washington 6 March 1926.
