USS Philadelphia (Cruiser No. 4).
Norman Eckley Edsall was born 3 June 1873 at Columbus, Kentucky. He enlisted in the Navy 27 June 1898 and was attached to Philadelpha during a Pacific cruise in 1899.

On 1 April, Seaman Edsall went ashore with a landing party under Lieutenant Philip Lansdale to suppress hostile natives near Apia, Samoa. The party succeeded in dispersing the natives but was ambushed while returning to Apia. Ensign John R. Monaghan, Seaman Edsall and another enlisted man were killed attempting to carry his wounded commander to safety. He is buried on Samoa.
