Above: Strong’s after 40mm mount at New York Navy Yard, 22 December 1942. In service, it proved too wet for a director-controlled gun and subject to blast from the 54 mount, and was replaced on surviving ships by three 20mm singles and two 40mm twins mounted to port and starboard on elevated platforms abreast the after stack. Strong’s career, however, was cut short before she could receive this modification.
