Capt. Hill receives the Navy Cross
Presentation of the Navy Cross and citation to Lt. Comdr. Andrew J. Hill by Capt. T.J. Ryan, Jr., aboard Nicholas in Purvis Bay, Florida Island, for courageous work in picking up survivors of USS Helena (CL 50) sunk in the Battle of Kula Gulf in the presence of enemy ships.
“My crew of the USS Nicholas,” said Capt. Hill, “I do not feel that I wear this cross alone. Every man, from apprentice seaman on up, helped and did every bit that was expected of him.”
Every man seemed moved by emotions of appreciation.
