At her christening
on 19 February 1942, the new Nicholas was sponsored by Mrs. Edward B. Tryon (“Betty” to her family), great-great-great granddaughter of Marine Major Samuel Nicholas.
   Although not the name ship of the new DD 445 class of 2100-ton destroyer—DD 445 was christened USS Fletcher—she was the first ship of the class launched.
