Beautifully restored to World War II condition in a program that began in 1984 under ship superintendent Tim Rizzuto, Kidd today faces upriver with her starboard side to shore. She sits on a cradle at low water but floats on bollards welded to her port side when the river level rises.
Also housed in her modern museum building is the “largest model ship collection in the South,” a magnificent display sponsored by the Baton Rouge Ship Modelers Association. Other exhibits inside and outside the modern museum building include a Kidd exhibition room, the Louisiana Veterans Hall of Honor, a USS Baton Rouge exhibit, replicas of the gun deck of “Old Ironsides” and the pilot house of steamboat Louisiana plus two aircraft.
Kidd is open daily year ’round from 0900 to 1700.
