Joseph B. Smith was born in 1826 at Belfast, Maine and appointed midshipman in the Navy 19 October 1841.

From about 1859, Lieutenant Smith served in Congress. As executive officer, he was in charge of the ship during the commanding officer’s absence when she was sunk by CSS Virginia at the Battle of Hampton Roads. He was killed in this action, 8 March 1862.
