The President of the United States takes pleasure in commending the

for participation in the following operations

    The Battle of Rennell Island — January 29 and 30, 1943;
    The Consolidation of the Solomon Islands — February 18 to March 30, 1943;
    The Eastern New Guinea Operation — September 4, 1943, to January 2, 1944;
    The Bismarck Archipelago Operation — December 15, 1943, to February 29, 1944;
    The Hollandia Operation — April 21, 1944;
    The Capture and Occupation of the Southern Palaus — September 6 to October 14, 1944
    The Leyte Landings — October 20, 1944; November 18, 1944;
    The Lingayen Gulf Landing — January 4 to 18, 1945;
    The Iwo Jima Operation — March 2 to 6, 1945;
    The Okinawa Operation — April 10 to June 14, 1945

as set forth in the following

CITATION:

“For exceptionally meritorious service and heroism in action against enemy Japanese aircraft, shore batteries, surface forces, submarines and mines in the Pacific Campaign. Operating over a long period of time in contact with the enemy and under attack, the U.S.S. SANDS performed her duties as a high speed transport with a superior degree of efficiency. In numerous assault and support landings in enemy held territory, the U.S.S. SANDS exhibited courageous determination and effort, thereby contributing materially to the success of the campaign. Her courageous determination and effort were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.”



All personnel attached to and serving on board the U.S.S. SANDS during one or more of the designated periods are hereby authorized to wear the NAVY UNIT COMMENDATION Ribbon.
