Three ships were laid down at Seattle’s Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company in 1962–63 and three at Bath Iron Works in 1964–65. At the former, they completed within the sequence of the builder’s unmodified Garcias; at the latter, they commissioned following the yard’s only other ship built on the same hull: Glover.

The Brookes enjoyed US Navy careers of slightly more than 20 years, concurrent with the Garcias: all commissioned in 1967–68 and decommissioned in 1989, when most of their Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided missile successors had joined the fleet. Four were subsequently loaned to Pakistan but later repossessed before scrapping.
