Steward Mates
Several shipmates believe that the steward made at lower right is named Washington. One of the others may be named Wren. Comment: “These two gentlemen did hang around somewhat with the white sailors. Blacks were used as stewards for the officers and chiefs. This is one of the negative sides of World War II. I didn’t have a clue where to begin identifying the men who fought alongside their shipmates as one.”
