The tiny silhouette of a Japanese torpedo plane appears to be outdistancing the splashing shells of American anti-aircraft fire off Guadalcanal, 15 June 1943. Army, Navy and Marine Corps fliers joined with surface ships and shore-based anti-aircraft units in fighting off an air attack by about 120 Japanese planes. Ninety-four Japanese planes were shot down vs. US losses of six planes, two of whose pilots were rescued.
