USS O'Brien
Edited by Destroyer History Foundation from a Naval History & Heritage Command photo.
O’Brien (DD 415) is torpedoed by a Japanese submarine, 15 September 1942. Wasp (CV 7), torpedoed a few minutes earlier, is burning in the distance. O’Brien was hit right forward but “whipping” from the detonation caused serious damage to her main girder, leading to her loss off Samoa on 19 October while en route back to the United States for repairs.
